The End of The Year

Good evening!

I hope you're well and wrapped up warm from the cold.  Christmas is now only a month away and I've finally begun my Christmas shopping.  Frozen 2 features heavily on the gift list this year and I'm sure I'll be sick to the back teeth of singing Elsa dolls by Boxing Day.

Anyway, down to business!

Thank you all so much for making the final Testify of the year so fantastic!  The open mic was brilliant as always and I really enjoyed welcoming Jay Delise as headliner.  She was in the UK for only a few days to graduate so we were really lucky that the dates (and stars! aligned.

As you know - there is NO December or January Testify, we won’t be back at our home Hanky Panky Pancakes, until February the 4th.

With our return comes a brand new event, and you are the first to know!

February will bring the first EVER Testify SLAM!

Now, I know slams are a bit controversial in the poetry world as they can be a bit exclusive and intimidating but fear not, this is a Testify Slam and so we’ll be doing things a little differently.

First of all, you’ll be allowed to read from the page.  There will be absolutely no marking down if you haven’t memorised the piece.

Secondly, the marking will be secret.  There won’t be scorecards held up in your face.  You won’t know your score, only who goes through to the next round and, ultimately, who wins.

As ever, there will be no racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia or ableism allowed and trigger warning will be requested.  Let's keep this space as safe as possible.

There will be a limited number of slots up for grabs which you can sign up for on the night.  Sign ups will be from 7pm and first come, first served.  There’ll even be a trophy for the winner!

Keep an eye out in the new year for the newsletter for hints and tips - especially if you’ve never slammed before!

With the new year also comes another change, our entry fee.  We’ve always been ‘pay what you can’ which means that money wasn’t a barrier to attending.

However, running a night costs money.  As well as paying our headliners, we have other small costs such as the website and other admin.  I have never been paid from Testify as host and organiser to make sure that we can cover all the other costs.  But money is getting tight, and if we want to keep inviting new and interesting headliners to Testify, we need to be able to pay them.

Therefore, I have taken the decision that Testify will no longer be pay as you feel.  It will now be a standard fee of £3 to come down to the night.

It hasn’t been an easy decision and I’ve held out as long as I can, but if we want Testify to continue, it needs to be financially viable.

Thank you for understanding!

I’ve done a little video promo for the Christmas period.  There are lots of photos included from the year so make sure you keep an eye out and share with your friends!  Your support for Testify has been unwavering, even during the hard months where I wasn’t around very much so THANK YOU!  We wouldn’t be here without you.

And that’s it from me!  We’re going to leave your inbox clear until the new year so all that’s left to say is:

Have a wonderful holiday period, however you celebrate it, and a fabulous new year.

Love and hugs
